Tip Calculator

A tip calculator computes how much gratuity to add on top of a restaurant or service bill — and optionally splits the total among multiple people. It answers three questions at once:

• How much tip should I leave₹ (Tip Amount in ₹)
• What is the total bill including tip₹ (Total Bill)
• How much does each person owe₹ (Per Person amount for group dining)

The formula is straightforward:

• Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip % ÷ 100)
• Total Bill = Bill Amount + Tip Amount
• Per Person = Total Bill ÷ Number of People

While tipping is more common in Western countries, it is increasingly practiced at restaurants, hotels, spas, delivery services, and with tour guides across India — particularly in metro cities and tourism-heavy areas. Our calculator removes the awkwardness of splitting bills and calculating tips mentally at the table.

1. Enter the Bill Amount in rupees. This is the pre-tip total shown on your restaurant bill or receipt. If GST is already included on the bill (which it typically is for restaurants), enter the post-GST amount.
2. Enter the Tip Percentage. Common amounts:
   • 10% — for average service
   • 15% — for good service
   • 20% — for excellent service
   • Custom % — enter any value for your preference
3. Enter the Number of People dining together (optional, default is 1). The calculator will split the total evenly.

Quick tip on "service charge": Many Indian restaurants add a Service Charge (SC) of 10% to the bill. As of 2022, the Government of India has declared that service charge is voluntary and cannot be mandatorily added by restaurants. If SC is already included in your bill, you may choose to tip less or nothing additionally.

Tipping in India is appreciated but not culturally mandatory the way it is in the US. However, it is an important income supplement for service workers, many of whom earn minimum wage or less. Here is a practical guide:

• Sit-down Restaurants: 10–15% is appreciated. If service charge is already on the bill, rounding up the remaining is sufficient.
• Food Delivery (Zomato, Swiggy): ₹20–₹50 per order is appreciated. Delivery partners keep only a portion of the platform fee — tips go directly to them.
• Auto/Cab Drivers: Not traditionally expected, but rounding up to the nearest ₹10–₹20 is a kind gesture.
• Hotel Housekeeping: ₹50–₹100/day is a respectful tip for hotel housekeeping staff.
• Airport/Railway Porters: ₹30–₹50 per bag is standard.
• Tour Guides: ₹200–₹500 per day for a good guide — tipping is the norm and guides often depend on it.
• Salons and Spas: 10% of the service bill is appreciated, especially for personal services like massage or styling.

Tipping reflects appreciation for service and directly benefits workers in India's large informal service economy.
